8a Sicilia Bat Night - City
To tie in with the 29th International Bat Night, organised by UNEP/EUROBATS, Sicily Bat Night is back for its eighth year. This time, it will take place entirely in an urban environment for the first time.
Organised by the Le Taddarite Naturalistic Speleological Association, the Department of Earth and Marine Sciences at the University of Palermo and the National Biodiversity Future Centre, the event is held in collaboration with the Grotta di Santa Ninfa and Grotta di Carburangeli nature reserves, which are managed by Legambiente Sicilia, and the Rewild Sicily Collective.
With the patronage of UNEP/EUROBATS, the Italian Speleological Society, and the Sicilian Regional Speleological Federation, this initiative forms part of the international Bat Night circuit, which has been active in over 30 countries since 1997 with the aim of raising public awareness of bats and promoting their conservation.
What to expect:
Informative mini-seminars: presentations by experts on the following topics:
- Underground habitats
- Biology
- Ecology
- Anatomy
- Cellular biology
- Bioacoustic techniques
• World Café: an open space for dialogue exploring topics related to bats and encouraging discussion between participants and specialists.
• Evening bat listening: a short evening walk to listen to the ultrasonic emissions of bats using specialised bioacoustic instruments.
⚠️ The presence of bats may vary depending on weather conditions.
